BRIEF HISTORY
Corpus Christi Church was established as a mission of the San Francisco
Diocese in 1892. In the same year a wooden American Gothic-style church was
built at a location to the west of the present rectory on property donated
by the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1914, Corpus Christi was made a parish
of the diocese with the first pastor being the Reverend John A. Leal. Since
then, 18 pastors have served Corpus Christi Parish
. The present church was built and dedicated in 1957, and the parish center
(consisting of the hall and CCD classrooms) was built and dedicated in 1969.
Construction of the parish center necessitated the demolition of the original
wooden church. The parish hall is dedicated to the memory of the Reverend
James A. Clark, who was pastor from 1964 to 1984.
In 1962, the Diocese
of Oakland was established, comprised of the parishes in Alameda and Contra
Costa counties. The first bishop of the new Oakland Diocese was Floyd L.
Begin. The current bishop is John S. Cummins, who dedicated the present marble
altar and the large crucifix in the church.
Corpus Christi Parish has a long and active history of ministry through
organizations and societies that provide for the spiritual and physical well
being of our parishioners, educating our youth, ministering to the needs
of those less fortunate, and generally caring for people--the church.
