Corpus Christi Pastoral Council Meeting Minutes May 18, 2006 Mission Statement: Corpus Christi is a welcoming community to all and is working to support everyone in his or her faith journey.
Members Absent: Tom Wohlmut
Prayer/Faith Sharing: Doreen Elections: As the prior elections were unsuccessful and we are currently short of new council members we have agreed that for this term we will have only a designated chairperson and we will rotate the co-chairperson seat on a volunteer basis.
Facilities Update: Terry has been obtaining bids from contractors on the roof. We hope to have the work completed before the beginning of the next rainy season. We have six phases mapped for the facilities upgrading 1) the roof, 2) stucco/plasterwork of the outside walls of the church, 3) the four bathrooms in the hall (new flooring, toilets, drainage systems and painting needed), 4) the parking lots need to be repaired and sealed, 5) painting of the interior and the exterior of the church building, and 6) new floor coverings in the church.
Council 15: Fr. Sal advised that the Diocese has agreed to extend a loan for the several facilities projects we have planned as long as the parish can show how the monies will be paid back. We discussed fund-raising, along with cost cutting. Three proposals for cost cutting included: 1) raising prices of the church candles (this has already been implemented) 2) eliminating missalettes and 3) lowering the music program expenses. Fr. Sal hopes to be able to get a fund-raising committee formed in the near future. Fr. Sal announced there would be a joint meeting of the churches of our local Deanery (Corpus Christi, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Anne’s hosted at Our Lady of the Rosary on May 24. The parish councils and staff of each of these parishes were invited. Gayle advised that the Just Faith Committee would be having their final meeting (for the 2005/06 session) in May but a new class would be beginning in September. Tom, who was not able to attend the meeting, forwarded an e-mail advising the planning for the Parish Picnic was well underway and volunteers have stepped forward to oversee the many tasks involved. Finance Update: Geoffrey presented the budget review for the parish. He noted that the good news was that actual costs of the parish ran just over the projected budget for 2005 by $3333. However, we need to continue to raise revenue by a minimum 3% a year to meet the basic financial needs of the parish. We can estimate too that we need to raise an additional $200,000 to address necessary repairs/improvements. Also noted was that: 1) we would benefit with Hispanic representation on the Finance Committee and 2) that a Pastor’s appeal to the parish would have a positive impact.
Facilities
Update: Parishioner and council member, Terry Callan
conducted an inspection of
the parish facilities to determine what areas need to be addressed in
terms of repairs. Serge Zilli, a longtime parish member and engineer,
drafted
the material specifications for the various contractors based on
Terry’s
inspection report. We need new roofing on the upper portion of the
parish hall,
and above the sacristy of the church and the opposing room. We
also are in need of corrective work mostly involving sheet
metal areas of roofing of the church. Terry
submitted specifications for the roofing and for the
stucco work necessary around the base of the church building.
Parish Picnic Update: Joe Martinez
came to the
council meeting to discuss current plans for the upcoming church picnic. Though he is not offering his services as
the chairperson he has agreed to help recruit volunteers and donations.
Joe has been involved in coordinating
many of the prior picnics and so he discussed in particular some of the
past successes and areas of opportunity.
Tom
Wohlmut has agreed to participate
as the coordinator of the parish picnic for this year.
Council 15: Postponed until the May meeting

Elections:
Elections were held but the
results were inconclusive.
Parish
Website: Enrique
Carino was present at the council meeting and discussed his interest
and the history of the parish website which he initiated.
He
has agreed to stay on as the coordinator of the website which
he will oversee and update as necessary. He has requested help in
finding a back-up for him. It was suggested that we comprise an e-mail
list of
interested parishioners with which we could then send out e-mail
“alerts”. This
would be one way we could “recruit” for this volunteer position.
Facilities
Update:
Terry
will be seeking competitive bids from plastering contractors and
roofing contractors. After the plastering is completed he will arrange
a
volunteer work crew (possibly teens of the parish) for painting over
the new plaster.
Parish
Picnic:
The parish picnic will take
place on Sunday, June 25, 2006. A committee has yet to be assigned.
Council
15:
Gayle presented a rough draft of
a “Just Faith” insert to be included in an upcoming bulletin.
Doreen attended a “thank you” feedback forum and luncheon hosted recently for volunteers who helped at the winter shelter at Corpus Christi. The majority of volunteers wish to continue with hosting it in December. It was noted this is an especially good time to host the event because so many feel the need to give during this season. Pastor’s Report: Fr.
Sal
suggested a grief support committee
be incorporated for parishioners so in need. Gayle agreed to call other
local parishes to ask about what others offer. Fr. Sal will contact the
Diocese for any suggestions or requirements they may have in this
regard.
The council has suggested that the Diocese provide insurance coverage for any parishioners willing to provide their “handyman” services around the church. Fr. Sal will contact the Diocese to find out if this is a possibility. Part of the church building and the upper level of the parish hall are in dire need of new roofing. The contractor, Bingham-Taylor gave a bid of $50,000.00. Terry proposed we get competitive bids from at least three more contractors. The contractor, Oliver, has provided an estimate of approximately $48,000.00 for stucco work/repairs around the church building, including a plastering contractor. If the Diocese would allow it, Terry has offered to coordinate the effort.
Geoffrey suggested we come
up with a target figure for monies needed to address the most
significant repairs of the parish facilities. This would include the
roofing, the
stucco, new floor covering and painting in the church. The roof and
stuccowork
should be completed by this summer. Terry
will
contact Alex Fernandes, the Diocesan engineer, to discuss future plans.
Council Ten: The social interest group Just Faith has requested help from the Council in publicizing its cause to the parish. In this regard, suggestions from those on the council included 1) submitting an insert in the bulletin describing Just Faith and its goals, 2) posting dates for Farmers Markets in the local area and 3) occasionally publishing addresses for government officials to encourage letter-writing of parishioners regarding particular subjects of interest. The group also requested that use of Fair Trade coffee in parish-hosted activities be encouraged, permission to establish a readily-accessible library of books about social justice in the church vestibule and a roster of parishioners. Fr.
Sal has ordered the return of the “little black books”.
Comments from parishioners regarding the December hosting of the homeless shelter appeared primarily positive though it was noted that we typically ended up with an over-abundance of food. Doreen will follow up with regards to selecting an available month for this year’s shelter. Actions are in place to finalize a new Parish Council roster for the upcoming twelve months. We currently have two open positions. Closing
